The Provençal santons were born during the French Revolution to replace the crèches of the churches which were closed during this period. "Santon" comes from the Provencal word "santoun" meaning little saint. The first and principal characters were biblical, but later included the people of the village who are bringing their offerings, the fruit of their daily labor, to honor the baby Jesus. A santon is formed from clay, then baked. |
